What's the Buzz All About?


Happy Friday and Happy Halloween, friends! There will be no dressing up for me this year but I’m very excited to spend tonight with my “boo” thing (hehe!). I’m not willing to accept that tomorrow begins November- fall is just going by way too quickly. Anyway, for today’s five on Friday, I’m mixing it up a little with a sports post. I know you’re probably like- since when does this girl talk about sports? Well, I have always liked basketball (a sport I actually understand) and Ryan and I love to go to games together so I thought this week’s game deserved it’s own post!






Wednesday brought the return of the Charlotte Hornets to the Queen City! They used to be called the Bobcats but changed their name, logo, and colors back to the original team from the 90s. The city was “buzzing” about this change (pun intended) and was very pumped for the season opener. I was also super excited that Ryan got us half-season tickets so we’ll definitley be seeing a lot of the Hornets this year. 




Here are my top 5 moments from the game:





[ONE] Everyone had purple glow sticks for the starting lineup introductions and then the game started with a little celebrity appearance. Darius Rucker came out to sing the national anthem!


[TWO] I love free stuff and was very excited to get this super cool tuxedo t-shirt. It’s an XL of course, but I’ll deal. Why so fancy, you ask? Well, back in 1988 when the Hornets first started out, a lot of fans and officials wore tuxedos to the game to celebrate Charlotte’s first major professional sports team. Now, that’s what I call a throwback!






[THREE] The ultimate Michael Jackson tribute band, Who’s Bad, played at halftime. Whether it’s a lady flipping bowls onto her head while on a unicycle (must watch!), a magic show, or a trampoline dunk squad, I think the halftime performances are half the fun!





[FOUR] Hugo the Hornet made his appearance! He’s our new mascot and it is my mission to get a photo with him this season. For now, I’ll stick with this cool guy on stilts!






[FIVE] A win for the Hornets!! We played the Milwaukee Bucks and the final score was 108-106. After being down 24 points they cut the lead to 3 points with 7 seconds to go. Kemba Walker (our star point guard) hit a 3 pointer to send the game into overtime and the crowd went wild! (I was sweating a little bit by this point). As if that wasn’t stressful enough, Kemba once again hit another huge shot with 5 seconds left to win the game. It was the biggest comeback in team history and great way to start the new season. You don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy the atmosphere of 20,000 fans screaming and cheering their hearts out!

Fur Vest Roundup

Fur vests are everywhere right now- the perfect mix of cozy and stylish. I have been wanting one of these for a few years now and I’m happy to say that I found THE vest. Unfortunately it is now sold out online, but maybe you can walk run to the nearest Forever 21 store to hunt it down. I have rounded up some of my favorite fur vests out there (that are pretty affordable, because spending $200+ on one of these is just crazy, right?). Orange Polka Dot

I originally got this dress before I started school last year because I thought it would be perfect for Campbell. It’s one on my go-to dresses for fall- what’s not to love about the orange and polka dots? We’re starting to get a teeny bit of fall foliage here in the south, so I was excited to see this bright orange tree! I love this dress paired with boots (especially before it gets too cold for bare legs). Frye boots are definitely an investment, but the quality is amazing and they will easily last you several years. I hope everyone is having a good week so far- it’s almost Halloween and then the holidays will be here before we know it… crazy!

Life in the ER: Part 2


Happy Monday, friends! My rotation is over and today starts my week-long break (yes!) but I wanted to share a few more ER stories with y’all. Although the hours weren’t my favorite, I enjoyed the rotation a lot more than I thought I would. I loved seeing new and exciting things every day and the overall environment with lots of people always running around. You would never get bored, that’s for sure. Here are a few more highlights!





FOREIGN BODY


I had a patient who accidentally shot himself in the finger with a nail gun one week before coming to see us. Somehow he thought it went all the way through but as the week went on, surely enough he felt something in this thumb, which brought him to us. We numbed him up, cut into his thumb, and went feeling around/squeezing trying to get the nail out… and we did! It was a tiny thing but he was happy to take the little souvenir home with him. 





PARTY HARD





If you remember our Campbell PA rap video (please watch it if you haven’t already!), then you may remember my roommate Jeff singing about something called “Saturday night palsy.” This is the colloquial term for radial never palsy because it’s known for happening in people who go out drinking and pass out on the couch. My patient was classic- he fell asleep on the couch, arm slumped over, and when he woke up he couldn’t move his wrist. This happens because when your arm hangs over something for that long, your nerve gets compressed, you feel some numbness, and your wrist just hangs there. No to worry though! We put him in a splint and told him to follow up with orthopedics. He’ll get functioning back, but it will take anywhere from a week to a month.












BEWARE OF DOG


Lacerations always got me excited because I love procedures. I had this one lady come in who tried to grab a toy out of her dogs mouth and what do you think happened? The dog bit her finger and broke it completely- it was hanging on by a tiny piece of skin on the underside of the finger, right below the nail (sorry for the graphic visual). The doctor didn’t let me do the repair because it was so complex (sigh) but at least I got to help. He had to suture her fingertip back on, going through the actual nail.. yikes! The best part was the lady was so calm and positive about the situation. If a dog bit my finger off, I’d definitely be in freak out mode… just saying!







FOOTBALL FRACTURE


I got to spend one day in the children’s ED and hang out with the kiddos. I feel like I’ve definitely become more comfortable with kids over time, but I still need to get better with the tiny babies (good thing I have pediatrics next!). I got to see a pretty cool procedure that night when a JV football player fell out on his hand and clearly broke something. He had a deformity in his wrist/forearm so we got an x-ray and poof! distal radius fracture. In order to get that back into place, we called the ortho residents for backup. To reduce a fracture you can either numb up the area of the fracture or use conscious sedation, which is usually done in kids. We gave the kid a sedative and within a few seconds he was ready. His eyes were open but he was totally out of it! The ortho guys put the bones back in place, took a few x-rays to check position, and he was good to go!

Five on Fri-Yay!

Happy Fri-Yay!! I say “yay” because I am officially done with my rotation, getting this emergency med test over with, seeing my classmates at school today, going to a PA party tonight, and packing up and heading to Charlotte tomorrow!! Phew. That was a lot. So here’s my Friday five… let’s get to it!
1 // BLOGGER MEET-UP
Tuesday night was a super fun girls night with some of my favorite bloggers! Joey, Meghan, Zelle, and I met up for a yummy dinner at Babylon in Raleigh. This place has one of the coolest outdoor areas that I’ve seen and the food… oh my gosh the food. I had the lamb risotto (and also for lunch the next day) and it was so so good, highly recommend. Anyways, it was so great to finally meet these ladies in person & can’t wait to do it again ASAP!
2 // CAMELS

In case you didn’t already know, Campbell’s mascot is Gaylord the Camel. I know… it’s quite the interesting choice but hey, it makes us unique. I’ve been eyeing this J.Crew sweater for a while and can’t handle all of it’s cuteness. A camel colored sweater with a camel on it- too perfect. It’s funny how you never think about a certain animal/color until it becomes your mascot but this camel stuff is pretty cute!
3 // NAILS OF THE WEEK
As if I didn’t have enough nail polish, I’m lucky enough to have an even bigger selection to choose from, thanks to Sarah (who actually has a lot more than I do). This week’s mani is Sally Hansen in Haute Chocolate. Obsessed with this color- it’s a brown/coppery shade with a little bit of shimmer that is probably one of my new favorites for fall.
4 // NURSERY TOUR

First things first, I can’t even comprehend having a child right now (or for very very many years) so this one’s not about me. However, I thought it was pretty cool that a Charlotte makeup artist, Lindsey Regan Thorne, was featured on The Glitter Guide for her son’s super swanky nursery. For all you future mammas out there, you have to check out this little guys pad if you’re needing ideas- straight out of a magazine (or Pinterest)- whichever you prefer.

Sweater Weather

I’m starting to feel the sweater weather y’all! I wore this outfit to the fair last weekend because I wanted to be in something warm and comfy. I have a feeling I’m going to be living in this sweater all throughout fall… anything I can wrap around me like a blanket gets a special place in the front of my closet. If you don’t already love BB Dakota, then you haven’t seen their fall collection. I paired this open cardigan with my olive jeans and my booties that give me a little bit of height, but are still super comfortable- I seriously saw a girl at the fair in 4 inch heels. I can’t. Anyways, here are some more of my cozy favorites!


I had a great last day at my rotation and as for now, my head will be buried in the books (coffee, anyone?). I have a big emergency med test tomorrow so good thoughts would be appreciated! Hope y’all have a great Thursday!
