Clinical Experience #1: Family Practice

The start of my clinical year is only 4 months away (eek!) but luckily I don’t have to wait until then to see real patients.  We started our “clinical assessment” course this week- which is where we travel to different clinical sites in the area and hang with the PAs & doctors.  Basically we could end up shadowing, seeing patients with our classmate, or seeing patients on our OWN (with the provider following up of course).

This week I went to a family practice in the area.  No shadowing or messing around here, but rather “you go ahead and see this patient.”  We’ve had plenty of OSCEs (where we see standardized patients at school) so I wasn’t that worried and I feel pretty comfortable taking a history.  Managing patients and knowing exactly what to do with them… that’s another story!  Obviously it’s a little soon for us to be doing that on our own, but I did learn a lot.  
I saw patients with chest pain, breathing problems due to COPD, and wait for it….. erectile dysfunction.  Yeah, you could say I was a little nervous when I saw that last chart.  First of all, we haven’t even gone over men’s health yet so I have a very general knowledge of ED.  Second of all, I was like “oh God I hope this isn’t awkward”.  Well, I can gladly say it wasn’t.  My patient was super nice & very comfortable talking about that so everything went smoothly!

It was a little intimidating at times, but I would say it was a successful first day seeing real patients with real complaints.  We have a women’s health OSCE today and I definitely feel more comfortable when it comes to interacting with patients, especially after being out in the community.  Stay tuned for more fun stories from the next few clinical sites: surgery, inpatient internal medicine at the hospital, and urgent care!

Bite Beauty Lipstick Duo Review: Palomino & Violet

So here I was on Sephora.com about to order my Clarisonic replacement heads when I realize I don’t reach the $50 limit for free shipping.  So into the cart went this Bite Beauty lipstick duo (that’s how they get ya).  This one is Palomino/Violet.

This leads me to my first beauty review.  I always feel better with a little color on my lips, although I suck at putting on lipstick.  This is a tiny little guy, but hey it’s $12 and you get to try out 2 colors, which is A-okay in my book. 
These are mini lipsticks so the actual stick is a little smaller.  They go on very smoothly and have a very very faint scent (a good one).  They are called “luminous creme” and I would agree- they have a lot of color & are moisturizing as well.  

If you’re looking to add a pop of color to your lips, but don’t want to shell out $30 for a designer lipstick- give this duo a try!  FYI, it also comes in a neutral version.  Happy Monday y’all!

Feeling oh so springy in pink!  One of the perks of having a roommate (that wears your same size) is sharing clothes, who’s with me?  I stole the top half of this outfit from Sarah’s closet and I’m thinking I should invest in a gingham shirt ASAP.  My closet is lacking button-downs and they’re especially good for tucking into a skirt.  And who doesn’t love a good statement necklace that goes with everything?  J.Crew Factory strikes again!

Birthday Celebrations Part 2: Charlotte Edition

Back to the grind today, but first… weekend recap!

So on the agenda in Charlotte this weekend were a few more birthday events (even though the weather was not cooperating.. grrrr).  On Friday night, Ryan and I headed to Fahrenheit for dinner.  It’s a very cool spot on top of the Hyatt Hotel with panoramic views of the skyline and the food & drinks were great!  I am taking off a star though for the parking situation.. the valet is a whopping $7!!!  I’m sorry but that’s overkill.  Pretty much everywhere uptown (other than the Epicentre) is complimentary so be forewarned.

After dinner we met our friends at Cowbell for some drinks & spiked milkshakes.  It was great to catch up and we even had some free entertainment provided by the couple next to us who were basically getting it on.  Ear licking and lots of whispering sweet nothings.  I can’t.

Saturday was another rain-filled day but we ran some errands & got massages.  I was seriously sick of the weather by this point.  But on Sunday, the sun finally came out and we spent some outdoors (yay!) at the park.  This was definitely a more low-key weekend, but I still had a great time with Ryan and my besties.  It’s still so hard to leave on Sundays!

PA Update

Semester 3 out of 7 starts today!  Our faculty are providing us breakfast (how sweet) and this afternoon we head to the hospital for orientation & badges.  One of our classes this semester is clinical assessment, where we spend one afternoon a week at a clinical site to shadow, take histories, etc.  Basically, we have a little less time in the classroom and actually get to see patients!!!
