Weddings & Birthdays

On July 4th we celebrated the wedding of our friends Jordan & Alexa!  It was held on Lake Champlain which made for a very pretty backdrop.  It was a little chilly at first- and by a little I mean I was freezing!!  It was very windy at first during the ceremony, but after an hour it died down and it actually turned out to be a beautiful night!  (PS. thank God for the south, I don’t think I could live anywhere else!).  Congrats to Mr. & Mrs. Maille!

Once the temperature warmed up and the sun was setting, a few of us went down to the beach to play around and have a little photo shoot.  I had to get the obligatory, cheesy “kissing in the sunset” photo with my handsome guy!
Time to switch gears.  I flew back to Raleigh on Saturday night and landed just in time to meet Sarah & the rest of the gang for her 25th birthday celebrations.  We had dinner at The Pit, a popular barbecue joint downtown.  Afterwards, we headed to The Raleigh Times and some of our other usual bars, but I didn’t stay out too late because after my long & super busy weekend, I was beat!  Sunday was spent relaxing by the pool & relaxing on the couch- wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s back to school today and I’m still exhausted from traveling and lack of sleep.  Did I mention I still need to get my room fully unpacked and in order?  I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!!

Orthopedics Lab: Splints & Casts

This is the lab we have all been looking forward to for several months… orthopedics!  I’m still trying to gauge my interest in this field but a little hands-on messy fun is always a good time.  I’ve never had to have a splint/cast/crutches in my life (knock on wood!) so I consider myself quite lucky.

First, we learned how to do a volar splint.  This is one of the most common splints we will use because tons of people fall onto their hand and usually end up hurting their wrist among other things. That’s why we call it a FOOSH injury (fall on outstretched hand).  And there’s your ortho tip of the day!

Next was the really fun part – casting! Briana put on my short leg cast (of course it had to be pink!) and I put a short arm cast on her.  There are 3 layers to the cast: 1) stockinette 2) padding 3) fiberglass.  Once you get the fiberglass roll wet, you have to be quick to apply it because that stuff hardens pretty quickly!

Next came the scary part… the saw!!!!  I don’t know what it is, but something about loud machinery with a blade coming next to my skin freaks me out a little bit.  If you just barely place the saw over your skin, it won’t cut into you.  However, if you apply too much pressure when you’re trying to remove the cast, your skin could overheat and you might be left with a tiny little burn mark (yikes!).  Luckily, Jeff was pretty good with the saw and left me wound-less!

These labs are fun because they give us a break from the classroom and let us get hands-on with each other to learn important clinical skills.  Only 1.5 months until I’ll be on my first rotation… can’t wait to use my skills on real live patients!!

Moving Weekend

Whew!  This weekend was a crazy one for sure- I am exhausted and so not ready for this Monday but the show must go on!  Linking up with Biana and Meghan for today’s weekending.

Second of all, I’m happy to say that I passed ACLS- thank God that’s over!  This class is kind of like CPR on steroids. Basically 5 of us would run a “mega code” where we would have to assess a patient, assess their heart rhythm, and try to get it back to normal. When the patient would crash and go into bad rhythms (like V. fib), then we would need to know what meds to administer and when to shock (defibrillate) them. Note: I just learned that the paddles (the things they rub together before they say “clear” and shock you) are now obsolete!  Now we use sticky pads which are apparently safer, but Grey’s sure made the pads look pretty cool!

Third of all, moving sucks! However, I am so thrilled to be close to civilization again… Target is a mere 5 minutes away. Heaven!!  I’ll be commuting to school until the end of July so operation packed lunch has commenced. Tips are welcome, please help a girl out! I have always gone home for lunch so this will be a big adjustment for me.  What are some easy things to cook and pack for the week? 
Pardon the short post but I have another pediatrics test to study for- it was kind of put on the back burner this weekend… Whoops!  Hope everyone had a more relaxing weekend than I did and I’m thankful to be settled into the new place with the roomies.  Have a great Monday & hope to see y’all for #Trending Tuesday tomorrow 🙂

And the Surgery Oscar Goes To…

Here at Campbell, we like to make PA school as fun as we can.  Before I started, I would hear horror stories about never getting sleep and not having a life.  Well, I’m happy to report that my experience has been quite the opposite and I am so glad that I chose this awesome program.

That being said, one of our surgery assignments last semester was to make an instructional video on a surgical procedure.  You could be as creative as you wanted.  Some took the more “vanilla” approach while others made it a huge production.  This was my first experience using iMovie and it makes editing incredibly easy (yet still a little time consuming if you’re a perfectionist like I am).  Let me also add that I have a whole new appreciation for actors because memorizing lines in front of the camera is hard work!

Many of my classmates go above & beyond and yesterday was no different when they hosted the 3rd Annual Academy Awards (Surgery Edition).  The hostesses were wearing fancy dresses, made a slideshow of the nominees & winners, and we had sandwiches catered.  They even had little Oscar trophies for us!  Sadly it was dark in there and I didn’t get any pictures, but I will share with you my video just in case you want to learn how to insert an IV (it’s not gross, I promise!).

This was the perfect assignment to let my creative juices flow and I especially loved seeing everyone’s funny videos today.  My whole weekend is being consumed by ACLS so let’s hope I learn how to save some lives people!!  Sunday is also the big move day…. so much to do, so little time!  I hope everyone has a fun & relaxing weekend and don’t forget my statement necklace giveaway ends tonight at 6pm.  Be on the lookout for the winner on Monday!
